How is data stored and secured on Karto?
As you navigate through our Karto, it's essential to understand how data is managed, stored, and secured. Here, we'll answer some common questions about Karto's data handling to give you peace of mind and a clearer understanding of our system.
What Type of Data is Stored on Karto?
Karto is committed to protecting personal information. No Personal Identifiable Information (PII) of individuals from towns or their residents is stored on Karto. In the future, Karto may contain features that analyze and gain insights into PII provided by municipalities under data-sharing agreements. This will be done through a different, more secure system designed to meet high security and privacy standards.
Where is Karto Housed?
Karto is currently hosted on Azure, a reliable and secure cloud computing service. Our cloud tenant is managed directly by HelpSeeker, ensuring dedicated oversight and management.
Location of Our Data Centers
The primary servers for Karto are located in Canada, specifically using Azure's Central Canada facilities. This ensures data residency within Canada, aligning with local data protection laws and regulations. While we utilize other data centers for testing purposes, these are not involved in hosting the live Karto application.
Data Center Options for Local Services
Karto primarily operates on Canadian data centers on Azure. This focus on local servers offers additional data security and compliance with Canadian data protection laws. However, there isn't any option for towns to choose a specific data center location within Canada exclusively for their services.
Login Security and Future Developments
Currently, Karto does not support Azure Single Sign-On (SSO) for logging in. We understand the importance of secure access and are working on a new identity management system.
This future system is expected to support SSO and may include additional security features like Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for local logins. The timeline for these developments is yet to be determined, but we are committed to enhancing our platform's security features.
HelpSeeker takes the security and privacy of data very seriously. Our choice of Azure's Canada Central servers reflects our commitment to security and compliance with local regulations. As we evolve, expect enhancements in our identity management and data handling systems, always focusing on the wellbeing and privacy of Canadian communities.
